Ibadan-based Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Asiwaju Kunle Kalejaye, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to declare a national emergency on banditry, kidnapping and terrorism across the country.
Kalejaye, who is also Chairman of Eagle FM, made the call in his Democracy Day message, saying Nigeria’s worsening security situation had become a national embarrassment before citizens and the international community.
The legal luminary said the Federal Government must take bolder and more decisive steps to stop the growing terror threat before it further weakens public confidence in the country’s security institutions.
According to him, the activities of bandits, kidnappers and terrorists have damaged public trust, especially as some criminal groups now disguise themselves in military uniforms while carrying out attacks.
He warned that the continued abuse of military symbols by criminals could reduce the prestige of the armed forces and expose security personnel to public suspicion and ridicule.
Kalejaye acknowledged ongoing government efforts against insecurity but said such efforts must be backed by a clear national declaration showing that Nigeria is ready to confront terrorism with all available resources.
He said declaring a national emergency on terrorism would send a strong message that the country rejects violence and is determined to defeat those threatening its peace and stability.
The Senior Advocate also urged the Federal Government to develop concrete strategies to crush terrorist activities, warning that criminals had become more daring and were no longer operating only in remote communities.
He said democracy loses its meaning when citizens live in fear and when law and order are constantly threatened by insecurity.
Kalejaye stressed that the protection of lives and property remains one of the most important constitutional duties of government, adding that security management must be proactive rather than reactive.
According to him, threats to national security must be identified early and neutralized before they become too powerful to contain.
He therefore appealed to President Tinubu to act urgently, insisting that Nigeria must demonstrate its total rejection of terrorism and related crimes.
“It is left to President Tinubu to save our nation at this perilous time,” Kalejaye said.
