He made the call on Thursday in Calabar during an interview session with journalists over the incident.

In November and December 2023, there were three incidents of kidnappings of many victims, accompanied by the killing of at least two persons in the area.

Willaims, the chairman of the Senate Committee on Upstream Petroleum Sector, appealed to his constituents to shun every form of violent clash in this year’s farming season that is around the corner.

The senator, who also condemned the reported attack by kidnappers in Nde, a community in Ikom Local Government Area, advocated a constitutional role for traditional rulers as a means of entrenching conflict resolution mechanisms in various communities across the country.

Senator Williams, who was the immediate past Speaker of the Cross River State House of Assembly, said: “The traditional rulers have a key role to play; that is why some of us are proposing an amendment to the Constitution to have a role for traditional rulers.”
