Ibadan, Nigeria – The Oyo State Government has issued a stern warning to students, teachers, and school administrators, reaffirming its ban on the use of mobile phones, smart watches, and Meta eyeglasses in schools—particularly during examinations.
The declaration came during a high-level stakeholder meeting held at the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, where the Honourable Commissioner, Hon. Olusegun Olayiwola, restated the government’s commitment to upholding discipline and academic integrity within the education system.
Addressing Permanent Secretaries, Inspectors General of Education (PS/IGEs), and departmental heads, Olayiwola emphasized that a standing circular already prohibits students from bringing such gadgets into school premises and exam halls. He urged school authorities to enforce the policy without exception.
“The use of smart watches, Meta eyeglasses, and other tech devices that could be used to perpetrate examination malpractice is absolutely forbidden,” the Commissioner declared.
He also appealed to parents, guardians, and teachers to monitor their children and wards closely, reinforcing the importance of a collective effort to preserve the sanctity of academic assessments in Oyo State.
“We must all work together to uphold the integrity of our education system and maintain discipline across our schools,” Olayiwola stated.
The enforcement directive reflects growing concerns about the misuse of emerging technologies such as augmented reality glasses and wearable devices that could compromise examination standards.
In recent months, similar concerns have been raised in other Nigerian states, but Oyo appears to be leading the charge in proactively responding to the threat posed by tech-enabled cheating methods.
This renewed directive aligns with the administration’s broader education reform agenda, which emphasizes integrity, accountability, and the proper use of digital tools in learning environments—not in violating academic protocols.
