The Chairman of Accord Party in Osogbo Local Government, Hon. Asimiyu Ajibola, popularly known as Baba Isila, has been shot by suspected gunmen in Osogbo, the Osun State capital.
The attack reportedly occurred around 9:50 p.m. on Wednesday around the Osogbo Community Bank axis of MDS, causing panic among residents in the area.
According to eyewitness accounts, the gunmen allegedly chased a blue Toyota Corolla conveying Ajibola and others before opening fire on the vehicle.
One of the occupants said they managed to escape to the Dugbe Divisional Police Headquarters, where they sought protection before the attackers retreated.
After reporting the incident to the police, the victims rushed Ajibola to the Uniosun Teaching Hospital, Osogbo, where he is said to be receiving urgent medical attention.
Reacting to the attack, the Osun State Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Oluomo Kolapo Alimi, condemned the incident and urged the police to conduct a thorough investigation.
Alimi said the attack must not be swept under the carpet, adding that those behind it should be identified and brought to justice.
He called on the police to investigate the matter professionally and without fear or favour, noting that the incident appeared to have possible political undertones.
The Commissioner also appealed for calm while security agencies begin investigations into the attack.
As of the time of filing this report, police authorities had yet to announce any arrest in connection with the incident.
