A Canadian teachers’ pension fund could record a major investment windfall from SpaceX’s historic initial public offering, after an early bet on Elon Musk’s rocket company reportedly grew into a multibillion-dollar stake.
The Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan invested about $220 million in SpaceX in 2019, when the company was valued at around $35 billion, according to a report by money.ca carried by Yahoo Finance Canada.
With SpaceX reportedly targeting a valuation of about $1.75 trillion in its long-awaited IPO, the pension fund’s stake could now be worth as much as $11.6 billion.
That would represent a potential return of more than 5,100 per cent for the pension plan, which manages retirement savings for hundreds of thousands of public school teachers in Ontario.
The investment highlights how early exposure to high-growth private companies can generate extraordinary returns when such firms later enter public markets.
SpaceX has grown rapidly through its reusable rocket programme, Starlink satellite internet service, government contracts, commercial launch operations and long-term ambitions in deep-space exploration.
The report noted that the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan’s venture-growth portfolio had already benefited from its SpaceX investment, with the fund recording strong gains in that segment.
Analysts say the potential windfall underscores the advantage enjoyed by large institutional investors that can access private market opportunities long before ordinary retail investors are able to buy shares.
By the time a company becomes widely known and prepares for an IPO, much of its explosive growth may already have occurred in private markets.
The SpaceX listing has attracted global attention because of its size, valuation and potential impact on Elon Musk’s net worth. It could also create significant gains for early investors, employees and pension funds that backed the company before its public debut.
For everyday investors, the case offers a reminder of both the power and difficulty of identifying transformative companies early. Such opportunities often require patient capital, strong research and the ability to tolerate high levels of risk.
SpaceX’s IPO is expected to remain one of the most closely watched market events of the year, with investors assessing whether the company can sustain its growth after entering public markets.
