Luke Shaw has strongly denied a claim that he thinks Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial shouldn’t be in the Manchester United starting XI.

During coverage of United’s 2-1 win over Chelsea on Wednesday night, for Red Devils defender Patrice Evra said the following on Amazon Prime Sport:

‘I think it will be tough for Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial to come back into the starting eleven.’

Last night, fans noticed that Shaw had appeared to like a social media post containing Evra’s comments, sparking suggestions that the defender was happy that the pair were on the bench.

But the England left-back has refuted that suggestion, replying to a now-deleted post from a United fan account on Twitter that had pointed out his ‘like’.

‘Come on don’t be silly, obviously not intentional,’ the 28-year-old wrote.

While the ‘like’ may not have been intended, few would disagree with Evra’s assessment.

The forwards have been under heavy scrutiny recently and while Martial has mostly served as Rasmus Hojlund’s back-up this season, it is hard to see him staying at Old Trafford much longer.

As for Rashford, just two goals in 19 appearances so far this campaign has seen his place in the side become untenable, something that would have been unthinkable last season when he was United’s key player.

Hojlund, Alejandro Garnacho and Bruno Fernandes seem to be undroppable right now, meaning Rashford and the equally out of form Antony are battling for the last place in United’s front four.

With a quick turnaround to their next game – at home against Bournemouth on Saturday – it will be interesting to see who Erik ten Hag picks to start next.
