The Lagos State Ferry Services has said the establishment of a search and rescue unit and data management centre by the state government will ensure the safety of commuters on waterways.

The General Manager of LagFerry, Abdoulbaq Balogun, disclosed this, according to a statement on Sunday, during the inauguration of a cash reward promo by the agency in collaboration with Eko Token in Lagos.

Balogun said, “I want to urge Lagosians to embrace the waterways as the government is committed to ensuring safety on the waterways through the establishment of a search and rescue unit, commissioning of a state’s monitoring and data management centre, procurement of patrol boats and U-safe emergency devices.

“There has been, since 2019, a transformation of the waterways sector and commitment of the Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, to the development of the state’s waterways which has afforded essential investment for crucial growth and acceptability among Lagosians and has led to an increase in daily commuter ridership to 43,000 passengers and ferrying of over 14,000,000 passengers yearly.”

The winner of the promo, Mr Awwal Ibrahim, thanked the government for the initiative.

“I want to thank Mr Governor and Lagos State because this is the only state that rewards people for using its utilities and services and as a regular waterways user, I think the initiative will encourage more people to commute via waterways,” he said.
