The government of Kenya has announced reinstatement of the fuel subsidy scheme that was phased out in 2023.
The subsidy scheme, which is administered under the Petroleum Development Levy Fund, was meant to cushion domestic consumers from the impacts of the international energy price crisis.
The government said that the decision was taken in response to the public outcry over the high cost of living and the adverse effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the economy.
The subsidy will ensure that the price of petrol will remain at Ksh 194.68 per litre, while diesel and kerosene will also see a reduction in their prices.
The government urged the oil marketing companies to comply with the new directive and pass on the benefits to the consumers.
It also appealed to the public to use fuel responsibly and avoid wastage. The government said that it would review the subsidy scheme periodically and adjust it according to the market conditions.
