The latest national presidential poll shows Vice President Kamala Harris ahead of former President Donald Trump, even though most voters think the country is headed in the wrong direction.
The YouGov and The Economist poll shows that Harris leads Trump by 3 percentage points among registered voters – 47% to 44%. Five percent of registered voters said they remain undecided while no other candidate polled higher than 1 percentage point.
Harris polls strongest among women, Black and Hispanic voters, as well as with those age 44 and younger and those who earned less than $100,000. Trump’s numbers are best among men, white and voters aged 45 and older. He also polls well – 9 percentage points higher than Harris – among registered voters who earn more than $100,000.
Overall, voters are pessimistic on the state of the country. Sixty-five percent of those polled think the country is off on the wrong track while only 23% thought the U.S. was generally headed in the right direction.
The negative views of the country were across the board, covering every demographic and peaking with 95% of Trump supporters. Still, 69% said they were at least somewhat enthusiastic about the upcoming election compared to 31% who were not enthusiastic.
Most voters also have their minds set on their November plans. Ninety-three percent of Harris voters said their mind is made up with 97% of Trump voters saying the same about the Republican nominee.
The Economist/YouGov poll was conducted Sept. 21-24 among 1,424 registered voters with a margin of error of plus/minus 3.1%.
