Many homes, offices and businesses in Ibadan are suffering from excruciating blackouts in the past three months.

In some areas not a flicker of light in the last three months while others get rationing of it for only two hours.
It has got to a state where residents are  planning to start daily protests to offices of ibadan electricity distribution company IBEDC.
” We are going to start sit- down protests till close  of office hours daily until power is restored to the city.
” I live at Asipa area of the city where you have over 200, 000 population.  For the past three months no electricity supply.  Most of us sleep outside at night as inside is unbearably hot.
” To worsening the situation you cannot preserve your food in refrigerator.  So you go to market everyday to buy Foodstufs which prices keep changing every minute because of what traders keep attributing it to  the unstable economy “.Says  Mr Joseph Adekunbi .
Mrs Caroline Aduobi a widow  from Oke- Ado in Ibadan said :” The government should come to rescue us. In the past one year I have bought three generators  to keep my business going but now the hike in fuel prices is making things very difficult.  Before I used to spend N50,000 in two weeks to fuel my generator. But now I conservatively spent in two weeks  N250, 000. How can I stay in business and take care of my family.
Our Correspondent that made enquiry from the officials at Ringroad  office of IBEDC in Ibadan they declined to comment but gave out published statement of 4 January that reads:

“The Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) has reported that residents living in Mowe, Ibafo, Abeokuta and six other towns will experience power outages due to a drop in power supply from Egbin generation company.

The company disclosed this in a statement on its X handle stating its technical crew is working with relevant stakeholders to ensure power supply is restored to the affected communities”

The Newspot gathered that the office of the Minister Of Power Mr Adebayo Adelabu has been inundated with protest letters complaining bitterly about the worsening electricity supply to the city.

The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has therefore summoned the chief executives of Abuja and Ibadan Electricity Distribution Companies, following the worsening power supply in their regions.

He also summoned the Managing Director of the Transmission Company of Nigeria, Sule Abdulazeez, given the deteriorating power situation across the country since January this year.

A letter signed by the Director, Distribution Services at the Federal Ministry of Power, B.U Mustapha, enjoined the CEOs of the Discos and TCN to attend a meeting to be held in the coming week. The power supply situation nationwide has continued to deteriorate since the beginning of the year and power stakeholders have attributed the situation to the over $1 billion indebtedness to gas producers for the amount of product required to run thermal gas-fired power plants.

The minister’s Special Adviser, Strategic Communications and Media Relations, Bolaji Tunji, in a statement, said Adelabu warned that the management of other non-performing discos would also be queried as reports continued to filter in on the situation in their regions.

He said, “These two discos have been summoned due to the worsening power supply situation in their regions despite improved supply from TCN.”
