The Osun State Police Command has issued a public statement responding to a call by Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, urging the Inspector-General of Police to intervene in the arrest of Abiodun Adegoke Apesin, an aide to the governor.
In a press release dated 13 January 2026, the police said the statement was issued after its attention was drawn to a release signed by the governor’s spokesperson, calling on the IGP to “call the Osun Commissioner of Police to order” over the handling of the matter.
According to the Osun State Police Command, Adegoke and another individual, Iyiola Monsuru, allegedly made what the police described as a “malicious and damaging publication” on 27 December 2025 against a prominent individual from Osun State. The command said a formal petition was subsequently submitted by the complainant, prompting an investigation.
The police stated that Adegoke was invited for questioning but could not be reached, adding that Monsuru was apprehended while efforts to locate Adegoke initially proved unsuccessful. The command further claimed that Adegoke was later arrested following what it described as diligent intelligence analysis.
In the statement, the police alleged that during interrogation, Adegoke confessed to the offence and pleaded for leniency. The command said he was arrested on 7 January 2026 and charged alongside Monsuru before the Federal High Court, Osogbo, on 9 January 2026.
The Osun State Police Command maintained that the investigation and prosecution were purely criminal in nature and were not politically motivated or targeted at any political party or affiliate. It rejected allegations of partisanship, harassment, or declining professionalism, insisting that it does not act on verbal instructions from political leaders but on formal complaints, credible evidence, and due legal process.
The police further urged members of the public, political leaders, and stakeholders to allow law enforcement agencies to discharge their duties without undue interference or politicisation, while reaffirming their commitment to professionalism, impartiality, and the protection of human rights.
Newspot Nigeria notes that the police statement represents the official position of the Osun State Police Command. The claims contained in the release have been disputed by Adegoke in a separate rejoinder, while representatives of the Osun State Governor have maintained that the governor’s intervention was driven by concerns over due process. The matter remains subject to ongoing legal proceedings.
