The Foundation for Environmental Rights Advocacy & Development (FENRAD) has commended the Abia State Government for the rollout of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses for public transportation, describing the initiative as a landmark step toward cleaner, safer, and more sustainable urban mobility.

In a statement issued on December 23, 2025, the environmental advocacy group praised the administration of His Excellency, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, OFR , the Governor of Abia State, for what it called a bold and forward-looking policy choice that aligns with global best practices in clean energy transition and climate-conscious governance.

According to FENRAD, the deployment of CNG-powered buses will significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve urban air quality, and lower public health risks associated with diesel and petrol-powered transport systems. The organization noted that CNG buses are widely recognized for producing fewer carbon emissions and reduced particulate matter, while also offering long-term cost advantages in fuel and maintenance.
FENRAD further highlighted that the initiative reflects a holistic approach to development, combining infrastructure investment with environmental responsibility. By prioritizing cleaner transportation options, the Abia State Government is not only easing mobility costs for residents but also contributing to Nigeria’s broader climate action and sustainable development commitments.
The group outlined several expected benefits of the CNG bus rollout, including improved public health outcomes, reduced transport-related emissions, lower operating costs over time, and new employment opportunities across the clean energy value chain. It also praised the government’s emphasis on orderliness, public safety, and inclusivity, particularly the consideration of persons with disabilities and other vulnerable groups within the public transport system.
While welcoming the milestone, FENRAD encouraged the state government to sustain the momentum by expanding clean transport infrastructure, strengthening maintenance and safety standards, and deepening public awareness on environmental responsibility. The organization also expressed its readiness to partner with the state on advocacy, monitoring, and community engagement to ensure the long-term success of the initiative.
Newspot Nigeria reports that the Abia CNG bus rollout is increasingly being viewed as a model for other states seeking practical solutions to rising transport costs, urban pollution, and climate challenges.

PRESS RELEASE
FENRAD COMMENDS ABIA STATE GOVERNMENT ON ROLL OUT OF CNG BUSES, HAILS MILESTONE IN CLEAN AND SUSTAINABLE TRANSPORT
Umuahia, Abia State – 23rd December 2025
The Foundation for Environmental Rights Advocacy & Development (FENRAD), a leading environmental advocacy and public policy organization, warmly commends the Government of Abia State under the leadership of His Excellency, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, for the successful Roll out of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses for public transportation in the state.
FENRAD describes the initiative as a bold, forward-looking, and environmentally responsible intervention that aligns with global best practices in clean energy transition and sustainable urban mobility. The deployment of CNG-powered buses represents a critical step toward reducing greenhouse gas emissions, improving air quality, and lowering the environmental and health burdens associated with fossil fuel–dependent transportation systems.
The Abia State Government has once again demonstrated leadership by embracing cleaner energy alternatives that balance economic efficiency with environmental protection. CNG buses are widely recognized for their lower carbon emissions, reduced particulate matter, and cost-effectiveness, making them a practical and sustainable option for public transportation in rapidly urbanizing cities.
The organization further applauds the government’s holistic approach, which integrates infrastructure development and climate-conscious policymaking. By prioritizing cleaner transport solutions, the administration is not only easing the cost of mobility for citizens but also contributing meaningfully to Nigeria’s commitments on climate action and sustainable development.
FENRAD notes that the initiative will deliver multiple benefits, including improved urban air quality and public health outcomes, reduction in transport-related carbon emissions, lower operational and maintenance costs over time, and job creation within the clean energy value chain.
The Foundation also commends the emphasis placed on orderliness, inclusivity, and public safety, particularly the consideration given to persons with disabilities and other vulnerable groups within the transportation system.
While celebrating this milestone, FENRAD encourages the Abia State Government to sustain the momentum by expanding clean transport infrastructure, investing in maintenance and safety standards, and strengthening public awareness of environmental responsibility.
