President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has extended heartfelt condolences to the family of the late former President Shehu Shagari following the death of his only surviving widow, Hajiya Sutura Shagari.
The President, who was represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima during a condolence visit to the Shagari family in Sokoto on Sunday, described her passing as “a great national loss.” He praised the late matriarch’s life of humility, service, and quiet dedication, noting that her character reflected the finest values of leadership and family strength.
Vice President Shettima offered prayers for Allah’s mercy on her soul and for her admission into Jannatul Firdaus. He also prayed for comfort for the Shagari family, the government of Sokoto State, and all Nigerians affected by the loss.
He urged the nation to continue praying for lasting peace and unity, especially during difficult times when resilience and collective support are needed most.
Responding on behalf of the family, Capt. Bala Shagari (rtd), the eldest son of the former President and District Head of Shagari, expressed deep gratitude to President Tinubu for the visit and prayers. He also extended appreciation to Governor Ahmed Aliyu of Sokoto State for sponsoring the late Hajiya Sutura’s medical care and for his consistent support to the family.
Governor Aliyu, who received the delegation, thanked President Tinubu for honouring the Shagari family at a moment of grief.
