Manchester United have established contact with RB Leipzig over a deal to sign Germany striker Timo Werner.

The forward is free to leave the Bundesliga club after falling out of favour this term.

Werner joined Chelsea in 2020 for a fee of around £55m, when the Blues hijacked Liverpool’s deal to sign the German.

However, Werner struggled in England despite his obvious talent, and he returned to Germany after scoring 23 goals in 89 appearances at Stamford Bridge.

United have desperately struggled for goals this term, and have scored just 22 times in 20 league appearances.

Erik ten Hag is keen to bolster his frontline but United are walking a financial fair play tightrope.

According to the Athletic, that’s seen United open talks with Leipzig to discover the conditions for a deal to sign Werner.

The German could be available on a loan deal, which would suit United as they can afford his wages but not necessarily a larger transfer fee.

United were interested in Werner in 2020 but they were chasing a deal for Jadon Sancho and chose to prioritise the Englishman.

The club now want to get rid of the likes of Sancho and Anthony Martial to make room for new signings, while they will listen to offers for Raphael Varane and Casemiro.

Donny van de Beek left the club on Monday to join Frankfurt on a season-long loan.
