In a recent statement, the Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, highlighted a troubling evolution in the activities of internet fraudsters, known colloquially as “Yahoo Yahoo boys.” During a meeting with the management of The PUNCH at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja, Olukoyede revealed that these cybercriminals have expanded their operations to include heinous crimes such as kidnapping, ritual killings, and arms trafficking.
The EFCC chairman pointed out that the nation suffered losses exceeding $500 million in just one year due to internet fraud, emphasizing the urgent need for a decisive crackdown on these criminals. “Last year alone, we received over 11,000 petitions and investigated close to 9,000, leading to nearly 5,000 prosecutions,” he stated, asserting that the criticism faced by the commission for targeting Yahoo boys stems from a lack of understanding of the severity of these crimes.
Olukoyede’s statement was marked by alarming revelations, noting that investigations have uncovered horrifying details, including cases where young female victims were exploited for rituals. He warned that if the EFCC does not take serious action now, the future of the nation could be jeopardized.
In addition to addressing cybercrime, Olukoyede reaffirmed the EFCC’s commitment to internal integrity by disclosing that 27 staff members have been dismissed over corruption allegations in the past year. “Fighting corruption requires integrity. We must lead by example,” he remarked.
The EFCC chairman called upon the media to play a vital role in shaping public perception of the commission’s efforts, advocating for a return to investigative journalism that highlights both corruption and the agency’s achievements. “The media has always been crucial in exposing financial crimes,” he noted, urging for enhanced collaboration between the press and law enforcement.
Michael Nzekwe, the Chief of Staff to the EFCC Chairman, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the media’s essential role in advocacy and public awareness in the anti-corruption movement.
As the fight against corruption continues, the EFCC remains steadfast in its mission to safeguard Nigeria’s future from the clutches of cybercriminals and organized crime.
