A women’s group known as StandUp for Women Society (SWS) in Cross River State has called for the arrest, prosecution and incarceration of the murderer of one Miss Edemanwan Edem.
The girl was allegedly murdered last week by one Mr Eyo Bassey in Iban Amanso, Akpabuyo, where she resided until her death.
The suspect was said to have owed her over One Million Naira.
She was until her demise an executive member of SWS and served as a strong voice for women in all ramifications.
The group described her murder as brutal, barbaric and gruesome. The incident happened in a community in Akpabuyo LGA of the state.
A Statement signed by the State Chairperson of SWS, Umo Basi-Edet in Calabar who also doubles as the Chairperson of Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) demanded that the full weight of the law be visited on the suspect.
All efforts by Miss Edemanwan to get him to refund the loan met brick walls and rather than pay back the Loan, Eyo Bassey chose to Kill and dump her in a septic tank.
Umo said, “The decomposing corpse of Edemanwan was discovered a few days later by the youths of the community even though the suspect had claimed that she was kidnapped and taken away by her abductors.
” We commend the Anti-kidnapping Squad for their prompt response and investigation. However, we want to stress that Justice must be done in this matter.
“Miss Edemanwan Edem does not deserve to be killed in such a manner after all the financial assistance she gave to the suspect.
Her family has been robbed of a breadwinner and the community and society at large have been robbed too of a great Woman.”
The suspect claimed that he collected the money to help him boost his palm oil business.
A suspect has also confessed that he attempted to poison her twice but she survived it.
