The eyes of the world will be on one small corner of the Middle East when the FIFA World Cup starts in Qatar this Sunday.

The opening match will see the hosts take on Ecuador which will mark the beginning of four weeks on non-stop football TV coverage.

But what is the time difference between Qatar and the UK and does this mean matches will start at preposterous hours on our shores?

Here is the difference in time and when the World Cup matches will kick-off for viewers at home.

What is the time difference between Qatar and the UK?

Qatar is only three hours ahead of the UK.

This means that fans back home will be able to watch matches at socially acceptable hours and don’t face any early mornings or late nights in front of the TV.

What are the World Cup kick-off times?

The first two rounds of the group stage will see four matches a day kicking off at 10am, 1pm, 4pm and 7pm, although a small handful of days will only have three matches without the 10am fixture.

For the final round of games in the group, two matches from the same group will begin simultaneously at 3pm and then two further fixtures in a different group at 7pm.

This is to ensure that teams do not have an advantage by kicking-off later than their group rivals which, in theory, would give them an advantage because they would know what they need to do in order to qualify.

The knock-out stages will see kick-off times vary between 3pm and 7pm.

The World Cup final will be held at 3pm.

Quarter-finals (December 9 – December 10)
