Patriotism means standing by the country — not by the president, not by the Senate president, and not by any public official, except to the extent that they genuinely stand by the nation.
It is unpatriotic to conceal the truth, whether about the president or any other leader entrusted with public service.
It is in this spirit that many Nigerians are deeply concerned.
At a time when insecurity and hardship grip our nation, it is disheartening to see the Senate President, Mr. Godswill Akpabio, traveling abroad — to Rome, Vatican City — for a burial ceremony, while communities across Nigeria continue to face violence, hunger, and daily struggles without corresponding leadership presence or intervention.
This moment demands empathy, presence, and urgent action.
Our leaders must always prioritize the needs and safety of their citizens, especially during times of widespread hardship.
Furthermore, the recent statement that “poverty is not a crime,” while philosophically accurate, rings hollow against the current backdrop where millions of Nigerians are struggling to survive. Since the economic reforms began to take effect, many families have resorted to selling their assets, engaging in risky ventures, or falling into desperate conditions just to meet basic needs.
Businesses are closing, employment is shrinking, and the cost of living continues to escalate.
It is clear that governance must urgently refocus — away from political survival and towards rebuilding the economy, restoring security, and giving hope to Nigerians.
Our call is simple:
End bad governance. Restore compassionate, people-centered leadership. Take it back, Nigerians!
All regions — South, East, West, and North — deserve safety, prosperity, and dignity.
Nigeria must not settle for anything less.
