Several Nigerians who grew up as children of former Presidents and Heads of State have told Newspot Nigeria that the current debate over Seyi Tinubu’s security detail feels unusual, even by the standards of the country’s powerful families. They said that while presidential children often live carefully and move with some level of protection, what is now seen around Seyi Tinubu appears new.

One former First Son explained that during his own father’s time in office, their movements were far more controlled and far less public. He recalled that even at the height of their family’s influence, there was nothing close to the kind of armed presence now associated with Seyi Tinubu. “Even Yusuf Buhari in recent years was not moving around with that kind of convoy,” he said. “Abacha’s children, Babangida’s children, even the military ones, did not live like this in public.”

Another former First Child wondered whether Seyi’s visibility is tied to his personal wealth and lifestyle rather than the presidency alone. “Maybe it is also because he was a billionaire’s son even before his father became President,” the person said. “Was this already his lifestyle? I honestly do not know. But it raises questions.”

Across these conversations, one theme kept surfacing. Even if Seyi Tinubu is entitled to some security protection, many believe a quieter approach would serve him better. “If anything, the more privileged you are, the more you should try to blend in,” one of them said. “Public life in Nigeria is too delicate for flamboyance. Laying low is not just humility. It is safety.”

Their reflections offer a rare glimpse into how those who once lived in the country’s most protected circles view the current moment. Some agree that First Families deserve structured security, but they also caution that visibility can turn protection into spectacle, and spectacle into public resentment.
