A US military aircraft, carrying around 100 Indian nationals accused of illegal entry into the United States, has landed in Amritsar, Punjab. The flight departed from Texas and is part of a broader initiative by the US government to increase deportations of undocumented immigrants.
The deportees will be processed at special counters established by local authorities in Punjab, who have assured that the individuals will be treated in a “friendly” manner. This operation comes as part of President Donald Trump’s strict immigration policy, which emphasizes the mass deportation of undocumented foreign nationals. Trump has claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has assured him that India would cooperate in accepting these deportations.
In the past fiscal year,
more than 1,000 Indian nationals were repatriated from the US, with the majority of undocumented immigrants reportedly coming from Punjab and neighboring Haryana. The number of undocumented Indian immigrants in the US is estimated to be between 375,000 and 725,000, making them one of the largest groups of unauthorized migrants.
Recent data indicates that there are over 17,000 Indian nationals currently awaiting deportation in the US. The Indian government has expressed a commitment to cooperate with US authorities in addressing illegal migration while also facilitating legal migration avenues.
As the trend of deportations continues, the US government is facing challenges with some countries classified as “uncooperative” in accepting deportees, including India.
