Human rights organisation, Centre for Human Rights and Accountability Network, CHRAN, has disclosed that so far, there has not been any reported case of human rights violation in Akwa Ibom in the enforcement of the third party motor vehicle insurance policy.
The Akwa Ibom State Director of CHRAN, Otuekong Franklyn Isong, who made the observation during a media briefing in Uyo, commended the Commissioner, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, and other officers for exhibiting professionalism and civility in carrying out the directives by Kayode Egbetokun, the Inspector General of Police.
He urged the police to maintain the tempo so that there would be no human rights violations during the ongoing exercise.
Isong noted that the five-man committee constituted by CHRAN to independently monitor the enforcement would not hesitate to call out the police in the event of any human rights infringement.
He also urged motorists to comply with the police and obtain their valid vehicle papers where third party insurance is inclusive.
“The Committee has submitted its report of the ongoing exercise and the CHRAN is pleased to commend the Akwa Ibom State Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, and officers and members of the Akwa Ibom State Police Command for enforcing the directive of the Inspector-General of Police on the Third Party Motor Vehicles Insurance policy without any human rights violation, extortion, intimidation or harassment of motorists in the State.
“The CHRAN urges motorists in Akwa Ibom State to obtain valid Third-Party Motor Vehicle Insurance and other valid vehicle licences and documents before plying the roads,” the statement read.
