Founded in January 1991, the College of Education, Afaha Nsit, has long upheld its founding mission — producing God-fearing, intelligent, and result-oriented teachers who contribute meaningfully to nation-building. However, with a national decline in enrolment for the Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) due to growing preference for bachelor’s degrees, the need for institutional evolution became urgent.
Governor Eno’s decision to upgrade the institution reflects a forward-thinking and data-driven approach. It aligns with global educational trends where colleges of education are evolving into universities to meet modern academic and professional demands. This proactive step ensures that Akwa Ibom students gain access to bachelor’s and postgraduate degrees in education-related disciplines without needing to leave the state.
