In a significant development amid the ongoing conflict with Russia, the United Kingdom has agreed to provide Ukraine with a loan of approximately $3 billion. The deal, designed to enhance Ukraine’s defense capabilities, was announced on Saturday and is set to support the nation’s weapons production efforts using revenues from frozen Russian assets.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed the financial support, stating, “This loan will enhance Ukraine’s defense capabilities and will be repaid using revenues from frozen Russian assets. The funds will be directed toward weapons production in Ukraine. This is true justice – the one who started the war must be the one to pay.”

The funds will be sourced from the G7 Extraordinary Revenue Acceleration for Ukraine (ERA), which currently stands at $50 billion. Under this mechanism, Ukraine has already received critical assistance amounting to $1 billion from the United States and European nations, along with an additional $3 billion from the European Union, according to Ukraine’s Ministry of Finance.

Ukraine’s Finance Minister Sergii Marchenko emphasized the importance of the UK’s role in supporting Ukraine during these challenging times. “The United Kingdom continues to stand in defense of Ukraine. Today’s agreement, which contributes to strengthening Ukraine’s defense capabilities, confirms this. I am grateful to the UK Government for this support and personally to Rachel Reeves for her significant efforts that made this agreement possible,” he said.

This agreement comes in the wake of a contentious Oval Office meeting that saw President Trump and Vice President Vance criticize Zelensky for allegedly being ungrateful for U.S. aid. Following the meeting, President Trump took to Truth Social, remarking that Zelensky “is not ready for Peace if America is involved.” In contrast, Zelensky’s meeting with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer was described as “meaningful and warm,” reflecting the strong bilateral ties between Ukraine and the United Kingdom.
