📍 Washington, D.C. — In a dramatic move with potentially far-reaching consequences, the United States Department of Education has formally notified Columbia University’s accrediting body that the prestigious Ivy League institution is in violation of federal civil rights law. The determination, which came after a joint investigation by the Department’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR) and the Department of Health and Human Services’ Office for Civil Rights (HHS OCR), found that Columbia University failed to adequately respond to the harassment of Jewish students on campus, thereby violating Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
The decision stems from an investigation launched on February 3, 2025, following national reports of increasing hostility towards Jewish students after the October 7, 2023, Hamas terror attack on Israel. According to the federal agencies, Columbia University acted with “deliberate indifference” toward reports of “severe and pervasive harassment,” effectively denying Jewish students equal access to education.
This latest development prompted the Department of Education to inform the Middle States Commission on Higher Education—Columbia’s accrediting institution—that the university may no longer meet the Commission’s standards for accreditation. Accreditation is crucial for institutions seeking to access federal student aid programs, including student loans and Pell Grants.
U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon emphasized the gravity of the issue, stating:
“Accreditors have an enormous public responsibility as gatekeepers of federal student aid. They determine which institutions are eligible. Just as the Department of Education has an obligation to uphold federal antidiscrimination law, university accreditors have an obligation to ensure member institutions abide by their standards.”
In accordance with federal regulations (34 C.F.R. § 602.20), accrediting bodies must now oversee whether Columbia comes into compliance or face losing its standing to receive federal funding.
This decision arrives amidst a broader national reckoning on campus climate and institutional accountability in the U.S., particularly regarding how universities handle race, religion, and national origin-based discrimination.
