A tragic incident unfolded in Indonesia as a tourist fell 250 feet to her death while taking photos on the edge of an active volcano.

The woman, identified as 31-year-old Chinese citizen Huang Lihong, was visiting Ijen, a volcano park in East Java, with her husband on a guided tour when the accident occurred on Saturday, April 20, as reported by Hongxing News.

The couple had climbed to the top of the volcano, renowned for its mesmerizing “blue fire” phenomenon, to catch the sunrise.

According to the tour guide, Lihong initially maintained a safe distance from the crater’s edge after being cautioned about the hazards while posing for pictures.

However, she later attempted to move closer, inadvertently tripping on her long clothing and plunging into the volcano’s mouth.

A photo circulating online shows Lihong seemingly posing with her leg raised against a backdrop of sulfur gas clouds just moments before the tragic fall.

It took rescuers about two hours to recover her body from the scene, according to authorities. The tourist’s death has been officially deemed an accident.

Her body is scheduled to be transported to Bali before being repatriated to China, according to local media sources.

The Ijen volcano is known for its “blue fire” phenomenon caused by sulfuric gas combustion.
