In a move aimed at consolidating key reforms within Nigeria’s trade and border security sector, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a one-year extension for the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Mr. Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR.
The tenure of Mr. Adeniyi, which was due to end on August 31, 2025, will now run until August 31, 2026. According to the State House, the decision was made to allow the Customs chief to consolidate ongoing reforms and advance high-priority national initiatives.
The Presidency listed three critical areas Mr. Adeniyi is expected to steer to completion:
- The modernisation of the Nigeria Customs Service,
- The implementation of the National Single Window Project, and
- The execution of Nigeria’s obligations under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) protocol.
Mr. Adeniyi, who assumed the top customs role in 2023, has been credited with introducing operational reforms, digital transparency tools, and trade facilitation strategies aligned with global standards. His administration has also pursued a reduction in import bottlenecks and better coordination with other border management agencies.
President Tinubu, through his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, praised Mr. Adeniyi’s “steadfast leadership and commitment to service,” expressing confidence that the extension will enable the NCS to better fulfill its triple mandate: revenue generation, trade facilitation, and national border security.
This marks the second major tenure extension within a key federal enforcement agency under Tinubu’s presidency, further signaling the administration’s intent to prioritize continuity in reform-minded leadership.
