The differences between Democratic Countries and Authoritarian Countries in terms of Work Ethics. By Wumi Akintide

Communist Countries like China, Russia and North Korea believe you cannot pray your way out of Poverty, recession and penury and barrenness but Nigerians and third world countries believe they can, and Pastors and Evangelists who are two for a penny in every nook and corners of most third world countries believe they can.

The greatest statesman and Nigerian Politician who preached and canvassed that building affordable schools and educating our children and building factories and industries and engaging in mechanized farming, are the only way to go.

The way out is not to build more and more Churches in every neighborhood and creating the fastest growing Denominations all over the world.

That we all must emphasize that the only way to Hell and to eternal damnation is to make our people believe that Religion or Faith is the only way out of recession and palpable poverty and penury. It is not, in all honesty.

In communist countries which don’t believe in theocracy and the notion that God created the world and everything in it in 6 days but had used the 7th day which is rationalized to be a Sunday as a day set aside for rest and for worshiping God.

Christian countries therefore, as a rule, work 8 hours, 5 days a week . They work for half a day on Saturdays but no work at all on Sundays. They also take planned vacation if they need some rest from work.

Communist Countries work for a minimum of 8 to 12 hours on week days and rest on Saturdays and Sundays.

We all can learn something from the brilliant statement of Raji Fashola below.

Mr Fashola was the two term former Governor of Lagos State and a very influential Minister in the Buhari Administration.

“…If you visit many construction sites where the Chinese are employed as Contractors, you will find that they work on Sundays, but we who have unemployment challenges, do not often work on Sunday.

We have invested a worrisome amount of money in building places of worship compared to what we have in building Factories, Businesses and Schools.

This is worrisome compared to the investments I see in Businesses and Schools that outstrip investment in places of worship in the West and Middle East.

Recently, while driving along a road of not more than 5 (FIVE) kilometres in a Nigerian City, a Colleague and I took an unplanned census of Building types and this is what we counted:

a) 1 Laundry outfit for washing and dry cleaning clothes (Job Place)

b) 3 Clinics for healthcare (Job Place)

c) 2 Petrol filling Stations (Job Place)

d) 1 Bank branch (Job Place)

e) 4 shopping Outlets (Job Pplace)

f) 1 Eatery (Job Place)

g) 10 Religious Houses (Worship Place)

As you go around your States and Neighbourhoods, I urge you to do a similar count and tell your Neighbour what you see.

Again I reiterate, I do not criticise worship, but I am challenging you to think through the choices you will make.

We will not pray our way out of recession, we will plan, and produce our way back to prosperity and out of recession…”

When the predominantly Muslim North is planning to impose the Islami Religion on the rest of the Country by enrolling Nigeria as a financial member of the Organization of Islamic Countries they are more or less saying that our work week should be further reduced to 4 days from Monday to Thursday and for half a day on Fridays so there is no work on Saturdays as well as Sundays.

Rather than allowing the 6 Geopolitical zones to go their separate ways as a Confederal Entities under a Federal Government which would only be in charge of Foreign Services and Defense Matters and Homeland Security which is offen referred to as the Ministry of the Interior in countries like Nigeria, Canada and the U.K.

If we do that, each Geo-political zone can then move and progress at its own pace and without being held to ransom by any of the confederal units that make up the Federation.
The Northern half of Nigeria do not share the same work ethics with most of their fellow Nigerians in the South. The Northerners who are predominantly Muslims and who all speak Hausa language with the eloquence and dexterity of a Dan Maraya Jos all believe in “Allah Yakau” meaning that Allah is completely in control of our lives. We don’t have to worry about tomorrow and day after because Allah is going to take care of that. Just live for today alone and leave tomorrow and day after mainly inthe hands of God.

Ian sure that Paul Krugman the Nobel Laureate in Economics would have a lot of problem with that kind of mindset and so do I.
So people who are preaching that the Oodua Republic and IPOB and Arewa must continue to identify with Nigeria and not go their separate ways are not doing us a favor. The best we can do is to embrace a Confederal System that allows each Geo-Political Zone a measure of self- Government and autonomy.

That I guess is what will be the best way forward, as the current American Presidential System we have embraced has proved to be far too expensive and far too corruption-prone for the governance of our country.

Under such a confederal arrangement each Geo- political zones with 3 in the North and 3 in the South would be able to manage and commercialize their mineral resources like Oil and Gas. Gold and Diamonds and Bitumen and White Sand for Glass in Ondo State and Coal and other mineral resources found in quantum in Zones like the Southeast and Benue Plateau and other States.

Under those terms, Nigeria would be a far less complex and far much easier country to manage and to govern for the total benefit of our country.

I rest my case.
