During Saturday’s semi-final at the Stade de France, Curry reported the incident to referee referee Ben O’Keeffe.
Curry was heard telling O’Keeffe on the ref mic: ‘Sir, sir, if their hooker calls me a white c***, what do I do?’
O’Keeffe replied: ‘Nothing, please.’
Mbonambi went on to complete the game as South Africa snatched a late 16-15 win over England.
When asked after the game if Mbonambi had said something he had taken issue with, Curry replied: ‘Yeah,’ and added, ‘it does not need to be talked about’.
World Rugby have now confirmed that it is reviewing the incident, while Mbonambi could be handed a suspension if found guilty which would rule him out of Saturday’s World Cup final against New Zealand.
A statement from World Rugby read: ‘World Rugby takes allegations of discriminatory behaviour extremely seriously.
‘We can confirm that we are formally reviewing the allegation made by England’s Tom Curry in relation to the use of discriminatory language during the England versus South Africa Rugby World Cup 2023 semi-final on Saturday.
‘World Rugby will not be making any further comment until the conclusion of the process.’
