🔴 Breaking News:

In a significant diplomatic development, Saudi Arabia announced its intention to review the obstacles preventing the resumption of Lebanese imports and the lifting of a travel ban on its nationals visiting Lebanon. This decision follows a meeting between Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS) in Riyadh, marking Aoun’s first international trip since assuming office in January.

The joint statement released by both governments highlighted the commitment to address the challenges impacting trade relations and facilitate the movement of Saudi citizens to Lebanon. The Saudi Press Agency reported that the two sides would begin studying necessary measures for re-establishing exports from Lebanon, which faced a suspension in April 2021 due to allegations of drug smuggling associated with shipments.

Historically, Saudi Arabia has been a crucial market for Lebanese agricultural products, accounting for 22.1% of exports in 2019. However, strained relations, particularly due to the influence of Iran-backed Hezbollah, led to the imposition of the travel ban, requiring Saudi citizens to obtain government permission before visiting Lebanon.

During his visit, President Aoun also expressed hopes of reactivating military aid from Saudi Arabia, which had been halted in 2016 amid concerns over Hezbollah’s influence in Lebanon. This visit marks the first time in eight years that a Lebanese head of state has traveled to Riyadh, signaling a potential shift in the dynamics of Lebanese-Saudi relations.

The discussions also touched on broader regional issues, including the necessity for the Israeli occupation army’s withdrawal from Lebanese territory, a topic of ongoing concern in the region. Aoun’s trip underscores a renewed interest from Saudi Arabia in Lebanese politics, indicating a desire to reshape regional alliances and promote stability.
