San Leandro Police Chief Angela Averiett has been charged with hit-and-run by the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office over a traffic incident that reportedly occurred in May 2025.

According to information obtained by KTVU, Averiett allegedly clipped a woman’s vehicle while driving an unmarked Jeep equipped with police lights. The incident reportedly happened on the eastbound Interstate 580 center median near Interstate 680.

Prosecutors allege that Averiett left the scene after the crash. The case was later investigated by California Highway Patrol officers from Dublin.

The charges against Averiett were filed on Tuesday, according to KTVU. The development places one of the East Bay’s top law enforcement officials under criminal scrutiny over an incident involving alleged failure to remain at the scene of a collision.

Hit-and-run allegations involving a senior police official are likely to draw public attention because law enforcement leaders are expected to uphold the same traffic and public safety laws they enforce. The case may also raise questions about accountability, internal discipline, and public confidence in police leadership.

Averiett remains the police chief of San Leandro as of the report. Further details on her court appearance, plea, or possible administrative action by the city were not immediately available.
