Qatar 2022: Bruno Fernandes accused of diving during Portugal’s World Cup 1-0 loss to Morocco

Former Manchester City midfielder, Nigel De Jong, has accused Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes of diving during Portugal’s World Cup quarter-final 1-0 defeat to Morocco on Saturday.

Portugal lost against Morocco, following Youssef En-Nesyri’s only goal of the encounter in the first half.

Before the break, however, Portugal appealed for a penalty when Fernandes went to ground inside the penalty area.

Fernandes made out that he had felt contact over his shoulder from Morocco defender Achraf Hakimi and went to the ground.

But the referee Facundo Tello immediately waved away Fernandes’ appeals, and VAR opted not to intervene and review the decision due to the way the 28-year-old had gone to ground.

Fernandes was furious with Tello’s decision to wave away his claims, and De Jong felt the former Sporting CP star got what he deserved from the situation.

“No, nothing,” De Jong told ITV Sport when asked if he believed Fernandes deserved anything from the referee.

“You could see who was at the end of it and who was lying on the floor again. We all see back in the UK watching the Premier League.

“Fernandes has a feeling of going to the ground in circumstances and situations like this. It wasn’t enough to give it as a penalty, especially in moments like that. The referee made a good call and the VAR made a great call.”
