President Tinubu Arrives Ethiopia for AU Summit, Secures Diplomatic Wins for Nigeria

President Bola Tinubu has arrived in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to participate in the 38th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the African Union (AU) Heads of State and Government.

The Nigerian leader landed on Thursday night and was received by Ethiopian Deputy Chief of Protocol Eshetu Legesse, Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, and the Charge d’Affaires of the Nigerian Embassy in Ethiopia, Ambassador Nasir Aminu.

Following his arrival, President Tinubu held a late-night briefing with Ambassador Tuggar and other senior officials, reviewing key diplomatic victories for Nigeria ahead of the summit. Among the achievements was the re-election of Ambassador Bankole Adeoye as African Union Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace, and Security. Additionally, Nigeria retained its seat on the AU Peace and Security Council, reaffirming the nation’s leadership in promoting stability and conflict resolution across Africa.

The high-level briefing was attended by top government officials, including Minister of Finance Wale Edun, Minister of Defence Abubakar Badaru, Minister of Trade and Investment Jumoke Oduwole, Minister of Aviation Festus Keyamo, Minister of Information and National Orientation Muhammed Idris, Minister of Environment Balarabe Abbas Lawal, and Minister of State for Finance Doris Uzoka-Anite. Also present were Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency Ambassador Mohammed Mohammed and Chief of Naval Staff Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla.

This year’s AU summit, themed “Justice for Africans and People of African Descent Through Reparations”, will focus on reparatory justice and racial healing. President Tinubu is expected to deliver a speech at the AU Peace and Security Council Summit, where discussions will center on pressing security challenges, including the escalating conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Additionally, the Nigerian leader will participate in key meetings on health financing, the establishment of an Africa Credit Rating Agency, and climate change mitigation efforts.

Confirming the President’s itinerary, Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information & Strategy, stated that President Tinubu will return to Abuja on Monday, February 17.
