🔴 Breaking News:

The Pentagon has approved the rapid deployment of a U.S. Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) to the Middle East amid escalating tensions in the Strait of Hormuz. The unit comprising approximately 2,200–2,500 Marines aboard an Amphibious Ready Group centered on the USS Tripoli is expected to arrive in 12 to 16 days from its current position near Japan.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth authorized the deployment following a request from U.S. Central Command. The force includes amphibious assault ships, landing craft, and specialized capabilities for forcible-entry operations. According to reports from the Wall Street Journal, AP, and ABC News, the mission is not a routine escort but a fully equipped contingent prepared to clear contested waterways, conduct mine countermeasures, and secure critical terrain if diplomatic efforts fail.

Iran has effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz to commercial traffic since the beginning of the U.S.–Israel campaign on February 28. Tehran has attacked tankers using missiles and drones, laid naval mines, and deployed speedboats, causing an estimated 80% drop in shipping activity. Insurers have largely withdrawn war-risk coverage. Iran’s new Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, declared the closure will remain “as a tool of pressure” until hostilities conclude. Threats against Kharg Island and warnings of “unrestrained bloodshed” if oil facilities are targeted have further heightened regional tensions.

Global oil prices have surged above $100 per barrel as markets anticipate prolonged disruption, with roughly 20% of the world’s oil normally transiting the Strait. While Iran continues limited exports, primarily to China, commercial shipping remains effectively paralyzed.

U.S. officials have stressed that reopening the Strait is non-negotiable. Although no confirmed back-channel talks between Italy and Iran have emerged, Washington has made clear that military options remain on the table. The MEU’s deployment signals a significant escalation in capability, not an invasion providing rapid response, deterrence, and the option to “open the choke point by force” if necessary. More than 50,000 U.S. troops are already deployed in the region supporting ongoing air operations.

The coming weeks will be crucial. Tehran has so far doubled down on its blockade, while Washington has indicated it will not accept indefinite closure. Analysts warn that any further escalation could sharply impact global energy flows, insurance markets, and regional stability.
