Pause law threatening TikTok ban -Trump tells US Supreme Court

U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has urged the Supreme Court to pause the implementation of a law that would ban the popular social media app TikTok or force its sale.

Trump stated that he would have time after taking office to pursue a political resolution to the issue.

The court is set to hear arguments in the case on January 10.

The law mandates that TikTok’s Chinese owner, ByteDance, sell the platform to an American company or face a ban.

In April, the U.S. Congress voted to ban the app unless ByteDance sells it by January 19.

TikTok, which boasts over 170 million U.S. users, and its parent company have sought to have the law struck down.

However, if the court does not rule in their favor and no divestment occurs, the app could be effectively banned in the United States on January 19, one day before Trump takes office.

Trump’s support for TikTok marks a reversal from 2020 when he sought to block the app in the United States and force its sale to American companies due to its Chinese ownership.

It also highlights TikTok’s significant efforts to build connections with Trump and his team during the presidential campaign.

Newspot recalls that TikTok previously requested the U.S. Supreme Court to temporarily block the law requiring its Chinese owner to either sell the platform or shut it down within a month.
