IBADAN — More than 120 pupils from public basic schools across Oyo State took center stage on Friday at the Lekan Salami Stadium, Adamasingba, as they dazzled spectators in the second edition of the Governor Seyi Makinde Basic Education School Sports (BESS) competition, organized by the Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board (OYOSUBEB).
The one-day sporting fiesta featured participants from seven educational zones, who competed in four major events: track and field, football, Ayo Olopon, and table tennis. The event served as a preparatory platform for the upcoming geo-political BESS finals scheduled to take place in Lagos next week.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Nureni Aderemi Adeniran, Chairman of OYOSUBEB (represented by Hon. Seun Oyewo), emphasized that sports play a vital role in nurturing well-rounded pupils in the state.
“Through initiatives like BESS, we are reaffirming our commitment to holistic education and the development of future champions both in academics and athletics,” he said, while commending Governor Seyi Makinde for his unwavering support for youth empowerment and education.
Also present was the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Hon. Olusegun Olayiwola, represented by Mrs. Bamidele Oyinloye, who applauded the competition’s inclusive spirit.
“Sports is a universal language that transcends barriers… Today, we celebrate not just the winners but every participant who has dared to compete and grow,” he stated, expressing pride in the state’s readiness to harness youth potential through sports and development programs.
Mrs. Olaide Ladipo, Executive Secretary of OYOSUBEB, gave a warm welcome to the participating pupils and praised their energy and sportsmanship. She encouraged them to carry forward the spirit of unity and perseverance.

All pupils were hailed as winners by the organizers, regardless of final placements, reinforcing the event’s focus on growth, learning, and sportsmanship.
