The Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) has made a fervent appeal to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, urging him to reject any attempts by governors to halt the direct disbursement of federal allocations to Local Government Councils. This plea comes in light of the Supreme Court’s directive, which advocates for the financial autonomy of local governments.
In a statement to Blueprint in Abuja, NULGE President General, Comrade Akeem Ambali Olatunji, emphasized the importance of adhering to the Supreme Court’s ruling. He argued that implementing this directive would significantly enhance progress, growth, and development at the grassroots level, where governance is most directly felt by the people.
Ambali expressed concern over the motives of governors, asserting that they do not have Nigeria’s best interests at heart. “We received with dismay the news of governors pushing to block the disbursement of Federal allocation to Local Government Councils as directed by the Supreme Court,” he stated. “We want to categorically say that governors are enemies of Local Government; they are saboteurs. Nigerians know what they are capable of doing.”
He called for a paradigm shift in the functioning of Local Government Councils, advocating for a system that genuinely serves the community. “We need a local government that works for its people, and that has been decided by the Supreme Court,” he added.
Ambali also reminded President Tinubu that it is the Nigerian populace that will determine his political future in the 2027 elections, not the governors. “Don’t succumb to their blackmail,” he warned. “Your work will speak for you come 2027. Be mindful of those in government pushing for this agenda; they are enemies of progress.”
As part of his commitment, Comrade Akeem Ambali, who also serves as the national treasurer of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), affirmed that the union will continue to mobilize Nigerians in support of President Tinubu’s administration and its initiatives.
