Nigerian, Adekunle Osibogun Elected The Deputy Mayor of Buckingham

Dr Adekunle Osibogun, a graduate of History from the University of Ibadan, has been elected as the new Deputy Mayor of Buckingham on 22 May 2023.

In this  capacity, he serves King Charles of United Kingdom and represents Nigeria as a member of the Commonwealth.

His ties to Buckingham started in 2004 when he enrolled for a law degree at the University of Buckingham. During his years of study at the University, Dr Osibogun was an active student in the community, winning the election to become President of the Student Union in 2005.

He graduated from the University of Buckingham in 2006 and was awarded the merit prize for his all round contribution to the life of the University of Buckingham.

He then enrolled for Masters in Law at the University of Manchester, but continued to maintain his connection with the University and Buckingham Town.

He returned to Nigeria to enroll as a barrister in the Supreme Court of Nigeria, before coming back to England to conclude his degree of the Utter Bar and was called to bar as a member of the Honourable Society of the Middle Temple in 2013.

Dr Osibogun is the great-grandson of the foremost Ijebu Ode educationist and politician, Pa Josiah Osibogun, an NCNC stalwart, who was the founder of Otubu Memorial Primary School, Ijebu Ode and St Saviours School, Lagos.

Dr Osibogun’s great-grandfather was a scion of Otubu Onafowokan, the Ijebu’s first Generalissimo. Pa Osibogun was also the personal assistant to Oba Theophilus Adenuga Folagbade, who went into exile following a banishment order in 1928 only to return to Ijebu-Ode after it was revoked in 1929.

Pa Osibogun begat one of the first and foremost Permanent Secretary in Ogun state at its creation in 1976, Otunba Olufunmi Osibogun (Otunba Ajana) who is Dr Osibogun’s grandfather. Otunba Ajana was a respected and disciplined civil servant who served for years as Permanent Secretary and after retirement was called to serve at the federal level as the Ogun Public Complaints Commissioner. He was the 1st Vice Chairman, Council of Otunbas and earned his reputation as a loyal subject and guardian of the history, culture and traditions of the Royal throne of the Awujale.

Dr Osibogun ventured into the Nigeria political landscape in 2018 and ran unsuccessfully for the House of Representative seat for Ijebu Central Federal Constituency.With a lot learnt, he remained unbowed and determined to serve mankind, Dr Osibogun returned to his second home in Buckingham where he began his research into improving the effectiveness of constitutional democracy in developing countries. He also joined the Conservative Party from where he became elected as a council member on the Buckinghamshire County Council and councillor on the Buckingham Town Council. Dr Osibogun continued to deliver his best for his people before his recent election as Deputy Mayor of Buckingham, England .

Dr Osibogun is the author of a book on good governance titled ‘The Citizens Book on Governance’, and the autobiography of Nigeria’s first and foremost cosmetologist – who happens to be his grandmother, Chief Olayinka Abiodun Wright-Osibogun. His grandmother was a decesendant of Oba Tunwase, from where Dr Osibogun is a blue blood of the Fusengbuwa Ruling House in Ijebu-Ode and relative of the late Otunba Subomi Balogun.

Dr Osibogun’s parents are broadcast and buisness entrepreneur and philanthropist Otunba (Giwa) Deji Osibogun, and renowned banker and boardroom guru, Otunba Debola Osibogun – former President Mortgage Bankers Association and Past President Chartered Institute of Bankers. Dr Osibogun is a family man with 2 children and 3 siblings who are light posts in their chosen career.
