Nick Kyrgios has been forced out of this year’s Wimbledon dur to a torn ligament in his wrist.
Last year’s runner-up in the men’s singles at SW19 confirmed his withdrawal in a statement on Sunday, which explained that he picked up the injury at the Mallorca Championships last month.
‘I’m really sad to say that I have to withdraw from Wimbledon this year,’ said Kyrgios in a statement.
‘During my comeback I experienced some pain in my wrist during Mallorca. As a precaution I had it scanned and it came back showing a torn ligament in my wrist. I tried everything to be able to play and I am disappointed to say that I just didn’t have enough time to manage it before Wimbledon.
‘I’ll be back and as always I appreciate the support from all my fans.’
The Australian has only played one event so far in 2023 due to a knee injury that he had surgery on, so this is another setback for the 28-year-old.
The official Wimbledon account posted: ‘Sorry to hear your news @NickKyrgios – wishing you a swift recovery and hope to see you back on our courts next year.’
Kyrgios was due to play David Goffin on Court One on Monday.
Kyrgios admitted ahead of Wimbledon that he had not been thrilled about coming back to tennis after missing months of action.
‘I don’t miss the sport at all,’ he said. ‘I was almost dreading coming back a little bit. But it’s my job.’
