Luton boss Nathan Jones is the odds-on favourite to replace Ralph Hasenhuttl as Southampton manager, in the immediate aftermath of the Austrian’s sacking.

Hasenhuttl was dismissed after nearly four years in charge of the Saints following a 4-1 defeat to Newcastle at St Mary’s on Sunday.

The loss left Southampton in the relegation zone and looking in serious trouble as they struggle to score goal and to keep them out.

The Athletic report that Southampton are considering taking a punt on Jones and the odds reflect that, with Betfair making the Luton manager the clear odds-on favourite to be the next permanent boss at St Mary’s.

The 49-year-old is in his second stint as Luton manager, after leaving for Stoke in 2019 and having a poor spell in charge of the Potters.

However, he is doing well back at Luton, with the Hatters eighth in the Championship after their win at Blackpool on Saturday.

The Welshman has never managed in the Premier League, though, and it would be a big step up to a club the size of Southampton.

Former Burnley boss Sean Dyche is, unsurprisingly, considered a contender as he remains out of work following his departure from Turf Moor earlier this year.

There are then a couple of less familiar names thought to be in contention, with Bodø/Glimt boss Kjetil Knutsen and River Plate manager Marcelo Gallardo among the favourites to get the job.

Gallardo has enjoyed a superb stint in charge of River Plate, originally taking over in 2014 and becoming the most successful manager in the club’s history.

He has already announced that he will leave River when his contract expires in December and the 46-year-old will be a candidate for many top jobs across the globe.
