New Zealand vs Norway tips: Expert World Cup predictions

Our football expert has three bets ahead of New Zealand vs Norway in the very first game of this year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Both of these sides head into this game on a poor run of form. Collectively, they have recorded just two wins in 14 matches in 2023. However, Norway are the clear favourite for the Women’s World Cup opener.

Norway’s class to shine through

The first of our Women’s World Cup tips is backing Norway to win by two goals or more.

On the surface, both of these are enduring a poor run of form ahead of this clash but Norway have faced much tougher opponents.

Their last three matches have been against Sweden, Spain, and France; three teams that feature near the top of the outright betting for this tournament.

The Norwegians are the clear favourite coming into this one. They also have the necessary firepower in attack to cut through the fragile New Zealand defence. They have scored five times in their last two matches having seemingly come up with a remedy for their lack of goals earlier this year.

New Zealand have been beaten by two goals or more in five of their nine matches in 2023. They are conceding an average of 2.22 goals per game over this period. Goals have also been hard to come by for the New Zealanders so it’s difficult to see them being competitive in this match.

New Zealand’s blunt attack to prove costly

We are backing the favourite to control the match for the second of our predictions.

New Zealand have been poor at both ends of the pitch in recent matches. We have previously touched upon their defensive woes but they are also failing to cause problems for their opponents at the other end.

Jitka Kimkova’s team have failed to score in seven of their nine matches in 2023. Their 2-0 win over Vietnam was the only time they have managed to score twice in a match this year.

Norway possess much more quality than Vietnam and they should be able to restrict New Zealand to very few opportunities. The Norwegians are currently 9th in the world rankings, while New Zealand are 26th. These teams met in the summer of last year. Norway secured a routine 2-0 victory on that occasion so this bet would have landed.

Hegerberg to star as Norway get amongst the goals

Norway won their opening match at the last FIFA Women’s World Cup 3-0 and they will be looking to lay down a similar marker in this tournament.

They have shown they are capable of scoring against solid defences in their last two matches. It seems as though the poor goalscoring run that started at the end of last year is behind them so they will be looking to showcase their attacking prowess in their opening match.

Ada Hegerberg leads the line for Norway and she is amongst the very best players in the world. She won the Ballon d’Or in 2018 and has been prolific for Lyon since she joined the club in 2014; helping the club win six UEFA Champions League titles.

Hegerberg returned to the national team last year after a five-year absence. She has spoken of her excitement ahead of the match with the ferns so she should be in fine form on Thursday.
