Nasarawa sanitation enforcement team arrests 106 residents

The enforcement team of the Nasarawa State Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources has arrested 106 residents across the 13 local government areas of the state for violating sanitation regulations.

The Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Yakubu Kwanta, who made this known during a press briefing held on Saturday, explained that 31 persons were arrested in Akwanga, 21 in Lafia, 29 in Karu, 4 in Nassarawa-Eggon, 6 in Awe, 5 in Kokona, 7 in Keffi, and 3 in Obi.

The commissioner added that the violators were engaged in private business transactions while the sanitation exercise was in progress, contravening the provisions of section 9 (2) of the State Environmental Sanitation Law.

Kwanta said that the offenders were promptly prosecuted by mobile courts in their respective LGAs, stressing that the seriousness of adhering to sanitation laws and to serve as a deterrent to potential violators.

The commissioner, while expressing his satisfaction with the overall compliance demonstrated by the residents, commended the temporary closure of numerous shops and business premises during the sanitation exercise.
