Missing ex-ASUU President: Nigerian community activates contacts, combs Turkey

The Nigerian community in Turkey and the Nigerian Embassy have activated their contacts to ascertain the whereabouts of a former President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Dr. Dipo Fasina.

The academic community in Nigeria has been thrown into confusion after Fasina, popularly called Jingo by his students at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife in Osun State, was declared missing on Saturday, 1 July.

His missing was confirmed by the President of ASUU, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, and chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri-Erewa.

When contacted, the President of Nigerian Community Turkey, Prince Emre Magbo, and Vice President, Enifome Ubogu said the search has commenced.

“With regards to the missing lecturer, we have activated all our contacts within Turkey in cooperation with the Nigerian Embassy in Turkey to find out his whereabouts if he actually arrived in Turkey”, they told PUNCH on Sunday.

He was said to be travelling to Algeria reportedly at the invitation of the Algerian government when he was said to have missed his connecting flight from Istanbul, Turkey.

Since then, his whereabouts were said to have since remained unknown.

Fasina, 76 taught Philosophy for over three decades in OAU and has been a guest of several detention camps in Nigeria because of his Marxist views and ideologies.

During the struggles for the validation of the June 12 1993 presidential election won by late Chief MKO Abiola, Fashina participated in several protests in Ile-Ife, Osogbo, Ibadan, Lagos, and several cities

He joined OAU in 1979 after returning from the University of California, Los Angeles, where he bagged his PhD.
