Mikel Arteta has told Arsenal to sign Real Sociedad star Martin Zubimendi in the summer transfer window, according to reports.
Zubimendi is open to joining Arsenal at the end of the season after turning down a move to the Gunners in January, with the midfielder keen to finish the current campaign with the Spanish club.
Real Sociedad have informed Arsenal that the 24-year-old’s €60m (£52.6m) release clause will need to be triggered in order for the transfer to happen.
Spanish outlet Sport are now reporting that Gunners boss Arteta has personally asked the club’s hierarchy to bring in Zubimendi in the summer.
Barcelona are also keen on Zubimendi but it is believed that the Spain international is keen to test himself in the Premier League.
Zubimendi has made 26 appearances for Real Sociedad so far this season across games in La Liga, the Europa League and the Copa del Rey.
He came through the Real Sociedad academy and has made a total of 124 appearances since making his debut in the 2018-19 campaign, registering four goals and five assists.
Arsenal are keen to strengthen their midfield ahead of 2023-24 and have also been heavily linked to both Moises Caicedo and Declan Rice.
The Gunners signed three players in the January transfer window last month as Leandro Trossard, Jakub Kiwior and Jorginho all arrived at the Emirates.
Arteta will be hoping they can help Arsenal lift their first Premier League title since 2004 with the north London side top of the table after 21 games.
