Mikel Arteta insists it is part of Arsenal’s plan to tie Bukayo Saka and William Saliba to new long-term deals after the Gunners confirmed Gabriel Martinelli committed his future to the club.

The Brazil international has established himself as a key component of the north London club’s title-chasing team with a series of outstanding displays this season.

Martinelli’s place is under threat following the January arrival of Lissandro Trossard, but that has done little to dissuade the 21-year-old from considering Arsenal as the club best able to advance his career.

Reacting to the news that Martinelli has agreed to sign, Arteta said: ‘It’s great to see him happy and ready to commit to the club,

‘He has huge potential, and there are so many areas to improve in all departments. In terms of consistency, in terms of the space he occupies.

‘He is so willing, that is the first thing about Gabi.

Arsenal will now turn their attentions to retaining the services of Bukayo Saka and William Saliba, both of whom have started to draw admiring glances from elsewhere.

Both players have less than 18 months remaining on their current deals and although Arsenal have the option to extend by a further years, Arteta wants greater security and reward the duo for the incredible progress they have made over the course of the current campaign.

He said: ‘Part of the plan is the extend the contracts of the biggest talents at our club. The others will be done whenever we can.

‘I see everyone really happy and willing to continue with the club.’
