In a significant verdict, former Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan was

found guilty on multiple counts of bribery and wire fraud after a four-month trial that exposed a yearslong scheme to enrich himself and his political allies. The jury convicted Madigan on 10 counts while acquitting him on 7 others and deadlocking on 12 counts.

The trial, which included over 60 hours of deliberations, revolved around accusations that Madigan conspired with utility companies, including ComEd and AT&T, to secure no-show jobs for his associates in exchange for legislative favors. Testimony revealed that Madigan also pressured real estate developers to hire his law firm for property tax appeals.

Madigan, 82, faced a total of 23 charges, including racketeering conspiracy. The jury’s verdict included key convictions related to bribery schemes involving ComEd and efforts to secure a state board position for former Alderman Danny Solis. The partial verdict was accepted by both prosecutors and defense attorneys after extensive deliberations.

U.S. District Judge John Blakey declared a mistrial on the counts where jurors were unable to reach a unanimous decision, leaving the possibility of retrials open. Acting Chicago U.S. Attorney Morris Pasqual hailed the verdict as a historic conviction, emphasizing the necessity of trust in public officials.

With sentencing yet to be scheduled, Madigan could face up to 20 years in prison, although his age may influence the final sentence. The case has raised questions about the effectiveness of the prosecution, with critics suggesting they may have overreached.
