Former England defender Micah Richards has urged England manager Thomas Tuchel not to leave Jude Bellingham out of his starting team at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Richards said Bellingham remains England’s best player and should not be the subject of debate despite competition for places in Tuchel’s squad. The former Manchester City defender made the comments while discussing England’s midfield and attacking options ahead of the tournament.
According to Richards, Bellingham has already proven himself in major moments for club and country. He described the Real Madrid midfielder as a genuine superstar whose personality and quality make him too important to be left out.
“In terms of big moments, Jude Bellingham, Real Madrid, Champions League winner, when England were down in other tournaments, he’s been the guy,” Richards said.
“He’s had the personality to step up in big moments. We’ve got a genuine superstar. It shouldn’t even be a debate. He’s the best player. He has to start,” he added.
The debate over Bellingham’s role has intensified as Tuchel weighs his options ahead of England’s World Cup campaign. Aston Villa forward Morgan Rogers has emerged as a strong contender under the German manager, creating competition for attacking midfield positions.
Rogers has also defended Bellingham amid criticism of the Real Madrid star’s personality and playing style. He described Bellingham as one of the best players in the world and said England should cherish him rather than question his place in the team.
Tuchel has previously suggested that no player is guaranteed a starting position, insisting that competition within the squad remains important. However, Richards believes Bellingham’s quality, experience and big-game mentality make him indispensable.
England enter the tournament with high expectations and a squad filled with attacking talent. Tuchel is expected to make key selection decisions as the Three Lions prepare for their opening fixture.
