Marcus Rashford enjoyed a night out in Belfast the night before calling in sick and missing Manchester United training this week.

Erik ten Hag said on Friday the forward was unable to train due to illness ahead of Sunday’s FA Cup fourth round clash against Newport County.

Rashford was in Belfast this week, visiting Northern Irish champions Larne who have just signed Ro-Shaun Williams, a former United academy star and close friend of the England international.

Video footage emerged of Rashford out on the town with United claiming those images were from Wednesday night – with Thursday a scheduled day off for the first-team squad.

However, The Athletic report Rashford also attended a nightclub Thursday night despite being scheduled to report for training the following morning.

The report claims Rashford attended Thompsons Garage nightclub on Thursday, returning to Manchester on a private flight on Friday morning.

Rashford scored 30 times last season but has failed to hit those heights this season with just four goals to his name. Speaking at his press conference on Friday, ten Hag explained Rashford was a doubt for Sunday’s fourth round clash against League Two side Newport.

‘This morning, Rashford was ill and (Jonny) Evans was ill so we have to see how they recover.’

In November, Rashford went out to celebrate his birthday in Manchester the same day as his side’s humiliating 3-0 defeat to rivals Manchester City. The event had been arranged prior to the game but the incident was described as ‘unacceptable’ by ten Hag.

‘I spoke with him about it. It is unacceptable. I told them, he apologised and that is it. It is an internal matter,’ the United boss said.

Quizzed further, ten Hag added: “As I say, It is an internal matter.

‘He is fitting in. He is very motivated to put things right. I know how much effort he is putting in. He makes a mistake but that doesn’t say he is not fitting in.

‘He is totally with us. He makes one mistake but also off the pitch what he is doing, how he lives, I am sure he is doing everything right to help the team and to perform and let us win.’
