Cash-strapped Manchester United are considering making a loan move for Atletico Madrid star Joao Felix after baulking at the Spaniard’s £100m asking price for the Portuguese star.

Erik ten Hag is in the market for a new centre forward after Cristiano Ronaldo’s acrimonious exit from Old Trafford last month.

However, though United are set to save around £16m in wages by offloading Ronaldo, the club’s cash reserves are depleted and the Glazers are reluctant to release more funds having just put the club up for sale.

United spent £220m last summer, which was around £95m more than they had intended on spending when Ten Hag was appointed.

Nevertheless, the Dutchman is pursuing a striker and he hopes to make an addition to his frontline.

A priority target is former Benfica ace Felix, who has been put up for sale by Atletico.

The forward joined the club for a fee that could rise to as much as £130m three years ago but he’s fallen out of favour under Diego Simeone and the club are ready to cash in on him.

But Atletico are seeking around £100m for Felix, which would make him United’s most expensive purchase of all-time.

United would not consider spending that much next month given the uncertainty over the club’s future but ESPN say they are considering a loan offer for Felix.

A six-month loan deal, in which United cover Felix’s wages, could suit both parties.

United would try to include an ‘obligation to buy clause’ in the deal, which would see them purchase Felix if certain criteria is met during his loan spell at the club.

It’s claimed Goncalo Ramos, the Benfica and Portugal forward, is another target and United will make enquiries for him next month.

However, it’s unlikely that the Portuguese club would cash in next month following his impressive World Cup campaign.
