Manchester United will aim to sign a striker in January to support Rasmus Hojlund up front – with Ivan Toney among the targets under consideration.

Hojlund joined United in a £72million deal from Atalanta in the summer and while he has scored three times in the Champions League, he is still to open his account in the Premier League.

The Denmark international is highly-regarded at Old Trafford but has immediately been tasked with leading the line with Anthony Martial the only other recognised centre forward at the club.

The Mail report United fear instant responsibility placed on the young striker’s shoulders could hamper his development and believe the addition of a more experienced option up front will benefit him and ease the goal scoring burden.

United are monitoring a number of options across Europe, including Brentford star Toney who could leave the Bees in January.

The 27-year-old is still serving an eight-month ban for betting breaches but has returned to first-team training and will be free to play again on 17 January.

Arsenal and Chelsea are both interested in signing Toney when the mid-season window opens with latest reports suggesting Brentford are asking fort £80million for his services.

United are also tracking Porto striker Mehdi Taremi. The 31-year-old, who is in the final year of his contract, has scored three goals in 12 appearances this season having netted 31 in all competitions last term.

United also retain interest in Napoli star Victor Osimhen, having been priced out of a move in the summer.

Osimhen’s future in Italy has come under fresh scrutiny in recent months. Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis held multiple meetings with Osimhen’s agent after the summer transfer window closed and there were reports that an extension was nearly done, but doubts have since emerged over his future at the club.

Those doubts were further fuelled after Osimhen fell out with Napoli over a bizarre post on the club’s TikTok account.

United are enduring a woeful 2023-24 campaign with pressure growing on Erik ten Hag having lost eight of their 15 games thus far.

Reports suggest Zinedine Zidane and Sporting CP boss Rúben Amorim are two names in the frame to replace him should results not improve.
