Rio Ferdinand has argued that Manchester United’s decision to appoint Omar Berrada as their new chief executive is their ‘best January signing’.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe made his first major move since buying a 25 per cent stake in the club on Sunday by poaching Berrada from rivals Manchester City.
The Spaniard had been part of the hierarchy at City since 2011 – having previously been employed by Barcelona – and his switch to Old Trafford is a major coup.
United legend Ferdinand feels the arrival of Berrarda will be more important than any player the Red Devils decide to sign in the current January transfer window.
‘I spoke to some guys who were at Manchester City,’ Ferdinand told his FIVE podcast on Monday.
‘They cannot believe we have got him. They think he has done so much in the game at different levels and has been successful and that it is a really good, sharp signing for us.
‘I think this could potentially be one of our best January signings. In the current climate we are in now, especially.’
Berrada has been a key part of City’s recent success on and off the pitch and played a pivotal role in negotiations for Erling Haaland back in 2022, while he has also been fundamental to the development of the youth academy.
His track record within football, coupled with his business acumen, made him the ideal candidate for United – and he will take executive leadership of both areas.
It was INEOS – not the Glazers – who identified and pursued Berrada but the family gave the move their endorsement and it is considered a joint decision.
